JOHN HANCOCK FUNDS TO DISTRIBUTE CAPITAL GAINS EARLY
Distribution estimates released

BOSTON, October 12, 2000 -- In an effort to assist shareholders with their year-end tax planning, John Hancock Funds has released estimates of capital gain payments for 14 of its equity funds. These funds will distribute gains in November and early December. All record dates, payable dates and projected gains are only estimates and may change as a result of market conditions and portfolio changes.

"Paying capital gains early gives our shareholders an advantage when it comes to year-end tax planning. With this knowledge, customers can make adjustments to their portfolios that could help alleviate their tax burdens," said Maureen R. Ford, vice chairman and chief executive officer of John Hancock Funds.

John Hancock Funds, a global investment management firm, manages more than $30 billion in open-end funds, closed-end funds, private accounts, variable annuities and retirement plans for individual and institutional investors.

John Hancock Funds is a subsidiary of John Hancock Life Insurance Company, which is wholly owned by John Hancock Financial Services, Inc. (NYSE: JHF). John Hancock and its affiliated companies provide a broad array of insurance and investment products and services to retail and institutional customers. As of June 30, 2000, John Hancock and its subsidiaries had total assets under management of $126.9 billion.
