THE MONTGOMERY FUNDS LAUNCHES MID CAP 20 PORTFOLIO

SAN FRANCISCO - October 31, 2000 - The Montgomery Funds today announced the debut of the Montgomery Mid Cap 20 Portfolio. The new offering seeks to uncover investment opportunities in smaller cap companies that have the potential for significant growth in their respective industries and are transitioning to become the leaders of tomorrow.

"The Montgomery Mid Cap 20 Portfolio is designed to allow investors to directly benefit from the opportunities available in the mid-cap segment of the U.S. equity market," says Scott Tuck, president of Montgomery Asset Management, the investment manager for The Montgomery Funds. "Mid-caps have recently taken a leadership position, handily beating their small-cap and large-cap counterparts this year."

The Montgomery Mid Cap 20 Portfolio invests in companies with a market capitalization profile consistent with the S&P MidCap 400 Index, focusing on growth-oriented businesses with solid fundamentals and excellent potential for long-term growth. The Portfolio is managed in a concentrated fashion, holding approximately 20 to 30 stocks.

The Portfolio, which is managed by Montgomery's Small Cap Equity team, benefits from over a decade of Montgomery's experience in identifying small businesses that have the potential to become large companies. Cam Philpott, co-portfolio manager for the Portfolio, is extremely optimistic about the near- and long-term opportunities present in the mid-cap segment of the U.S. equity market. "Our Small Cap team has developed a thorough understanding of hundreds of smaller companies over more than a decade. Although many of these companies have since grown beyond the range for our small-cap offerings, many continue to offer excellent potential for further growth. We launched the Montgomery Mid Cap 20 Portfolio so that investors could benefit from our deep fundamental understanding of these investment opportunities," asserts Philpott. He added, "We believe mid-cap companies offer a very attractive combination of stability and opportunity as they are generally more seasoned than small-cap companies, but have greater growth potential than larger companies."

  • Portfolios that concentrate their investments in a specific industry, sector or relatively small number of stocks, are subject to a higher degree of risk than more diversified portfolios. There are risks associated with investing in mid-cap companies, which tend to be more volatile and less liquid than stocks of large companies, including the increased risk of price fluctuations.

  • Stock Solutions may not be suitable for all investors. Portfolio holdings are posted on a delayed basis.
