STATE STREET RESEARCH AWARDED NEW INSTITUTIONAL BUSINESS FROM SUNAMERICA

BOSTON, MA, December 13, 2001- State Street Research & Management Company announced today that it has been selected to provide subadvisory investment management for SunAmerica's Focused International Portfolio. This new business was awarded to the State Street Research, which manages the Concentrated International Equity Portfolio.

SunAmerica Mutual Funds announced the launch of the SunAmerica Focused International Portfolio earlier this month. This new fund offers investors 30 international stock selections from three investment managers: State Street Research, MFS and Harris Associates. Each investment manager independently selects up to 10 stocks per portfolio, purchasing stocks of any market size or capitalization, focusing on large-capitalization securities from any developed market outside of the United States.

SunAmerica Mutual Funds employs a rigorous approach to selecting investment advisers. The firm conducted both quantitative and qualitative evaluations of each investment manager's stock selection process and specifically analyzed their research and analytical capabilities to identify advisers who have outperformed relevant indexes and peers in both rising and falling markets.* SunAmerica Mutual Funds also performs risk/reward analyses and ongoing reviews of advisers to ensure that they meet the fund's mandate and high investment standards.

"We are extremely pleased to have been selected by SunAmerica to manage assets for their new product as a result of their competitive search process," said Chris Abbott, Executive Vice President, Head of Institutional Marketing. "This significant win speaks volumes to the importance of relationship building, diligence and investment management capabilities."

State Street Research & Management Company, with a money management history dating back to 1924, is one of the nation's first investment management organizations. The Boston-based firm is a subsidiary of MetLife, one of the world's largest financial services companies. As of November 30, 2001, State Street Research managed $46.0 billion in assets, of which $28.5 billion represented institutional clients and $17.5 billion represented mutual fund and variable annuity portfolios. The firm has managed pension money for many of the largest U.S. corporate pension plans for over 30 years. State Street Research also manages money for union retirement programs, public employee pension plans, mutual funds for over 576,000 shareholder accounts, as well as individually managed accounts for affluent investors. The firm's Institutional Web site address is www.ssrinstitutional.com.
