STATE STREET RESEARCH OFFERS VALUE-ADDED INCENTIVES ON NEW IRA ACCOUNTS

BOSTON, MA, December 6, 2000-State Street Research, a firm that has been helping investors reach their financial goals since 1924, is offering value-added incentives to investors who open new Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs)-Traditional, Roth and Rollover- from January 1, 2001 to April 15, 2001.

First, State Street Research is waiving the annual IRA maintenance fee on all new IRAs opened from January 1, 2001 to April 15, 2001. Additionally, investors can open a new State Street Research IRA account with a minimum initial investment of only $500 rather than the $2000 that usually applies. Capitalizing on its long history of investment expertise, State Street Research is promoting its flagship fund, State Street Research Investment Trust, the second oldest mutual fund in the United States. State Street Research Investment Trust may be a suitable IRA investment option for investors who seek a moderately aggressive, large cap fund for a long-term goal, with a blend of growth and value investments. The Fund invests in some of America's biggest and best-known companies in a broad range of industries.

"Reducing the minimums on new accounts should attract younger investors and encourage them to develop sound retirement planning habits," said Kevin Wilkins, Executive Vice President, Head of Retail Marketing and Client Services Group. "The fee waiver makes the IRAs-Traditional, Roth and Rollover-very attractive retirement tools, especially to investors who are changing jobs or about to retire."

State Street Research & Management Company, with a money management history dating back to 1924, is one of the nation's first investment management organizations. The Boston-based firm is a subsidiary of MetLife. As of October 31, 2000, State Street Research managed $54 billion in assets, of which $34 billion represented institutional clients and $20 billion represented mutual fund and variable annuity portfolios. The firm is managing money for 10 of the 12 largest U.S. corporate pension plans, union programs, and public employee pension plans; mutual funds for over 530,000 shareholder accounts; and individually managed accounts for affluent investors. The firm's Web site address is www.ssrfunds.com.
